Obituary

Laurence Allan English was born on April 19, 1931, in Bonner Springs, Kansas, the fifth child of Henry Colvin and Minnie Sophronia (Smith) English. He passed away at The Felida Guest Home in Vancouver, Washington, on January 27, 2019, at the age of 87.

Larry was student body president and graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Sara Virginia Lee, on November 4, 1950 in Bonner Springs. After serving in the Korean War, Larry graduated magna cum laude from Kansas State University in 1958 in Civil Engineering. He earned his Master's degree from University of Kansas in 1969.

Larry worked in the Kansas City area as a structural engineer and during that time, Laura Beth (1961) and Eric Lee (1964) were born. He received a job offer in Seattle and moved with the family to Issaquah, Washington, in 1969.

A skilled engineer, Larry was proud of his accomplishments including work on the Seattle Kingdome, the Rainier Bank Tower, and structural reinforcement of The Paradise Inn at Mt. Rainer. He served as president of the local chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers. In 1970, Larry moved with his family to Honolulu, Hawaii, to work there for several months.

Larry loved hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing and was a member of the Seattle Mountaineers. He and Virginia served as weekend chairmen at the Mt. Baker Mountaineer’s Lodge many times. Larry enjoyed building igloos and slept in them with Virginia outside the lodge on several occasions. He summited Mt. Rainer with the guide service in 1971. Larry enjoyed astronomy and built his own telescope, grinding his own mirror. He and Virginia enjoyed giving “star parties” on the red brick patio he had built in their backyard. He would hand crank homemade ice cream as a special treat.

Larry was a member of Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, KS and Newport Covenant Church in Bellevue, WA, serving as Scoutmaster in both churches. He was active politically in environmental causes and instilled a love of nature in his family.

Larry’s interests included genealogy and playing the guitar and harmonica, especially folk and country music, much to the delight of his grandchildren. He enjoyed fine dining and fine wine. Larry loved to garden and took great pride in the care of his yard after he retired.

In 2006, Larry and Virginia moved to Providence Point, a retirement community in Issaquah, where he served on various committees. In later years, he was a member of University Presbyterian Church in Seattle.

Larry leaves behind a daughter, Laurie Mudge (John) of Vancouver, WA, a son, Eric English (Annette) of Seattle, and four grandchildren: Daniel Mudge, Lindey, Lauren, and Erin English, of Seattle. Larry's cremains will be buried along with Virginia’s in the Edwardsville Cemetery, Edwardsville, Kansas. Virginia passed away one year ago.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 2 pm at the Issaquah Valley Senior Center, 75 NE Creek Way, Issaquah, WA 98027.

The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association.
