Sara Virginia Lee English was born to Paul Alvah and Erma (Craighead) Lee on October 8, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri. and passed away at The Felida Guest Home in Vancouver, WA, on February 13, 2018. Virginia graduated as salutatorian of her class from Bonner Springs High School in 1950 and married her high school sweetheart, Laurence Allan English, on November 4, 1950.

Always a devoted wife, Virginia worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture insect laboratory near Kansas State University putting Larry through college after he came home from the Korean War. Virginia stayed home to raise her daughter, Laura Beth English Mudge (1961), and son, Eric Lee English (1964). The family moved to Issaquah, Washington, in 1969, where they enjoyed the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Virginia enjoyed hiking, skiing and snowshoeing with her family and was a member of the Seattle Mountaineers. She worked as a legal secretary once the kids were high school aged, eventually retiring from the Washington State Attorney General’s office in 2006 at the age of 74. Virginia loved to entertain at her home, and was affectionately known to friends as “the hostess with the mostest” as she hosted summer patio parties and countless holiday meals. Those who came to the summer events will remember Virginia and Larry’s signature dessert - hand cranked homemade ice cream.

Virginia’s musical gifts and strong Christian faith led her to serve as church organist at Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kansas, from 1964 - 1969, and Newport Covenant Church in Bellevue, Washington, from 1970 - 1993. In later years, she was a member of University Presbyterian Church in Seattle. Her upbringing on a Kansas farm contributed to her love of gardening and flowers, particularly daffodils, roses, iris, and peonies, always planting flowers in pots on her front doorstep and patio.

In 2006, Virginia and Larry moved to Providence Point, a retirement community in Issaquah. Virginia had a generous heart, a realistic view of life, and was sympathetic and encouraging to others. She was a great listener and gave wise advice, many times concluding the conversation with “Keep your chins up”. Virginia was forthright and honest, a great reader of non-fiction, enjoying political and historical works. She enjoyed going to the theater and symphony and had a keen interest in genealogy as a member of the DAR. Virginia loved and was loved beyond measure by her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite sayings was “You never know when you’re making a memory” and she made many happy ones with her family. She leaves her husband of 67 years, Laurence English, two children: Laurie Mudge (John) of Vancouver, Washington, and Eric English (Annette) of Seattle, a brother, John Lee, of Bluffdale, Utah, four grandchildren: Daniel Mudge, Lauren, Lindey and Erin English, of Seattle, WA. Virginia’s cremains will be buried near family in the Edwardsville Cemetery, Edwardsville, Kansas.
